Puerto viejo beaches6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() This region has a rich history of growing quality cacao. One way to help the local community is by attending a Cacao Tour. Follow the dirt road across from El Refugio restaurant (also highly recommended for dinners). Playa Grande: between Punta Uva and Manzanillo this beach break offers arguably the best wave in the area. The lineup is usually located right in front of the lifeguard’s stand. Not for the faint-of-heart, experts only.Ĭocles, Beach Break: As the name implies this is a beach break with fairly consistent waves. If it’s breaking, there will be many cars and spectators parked next to Salsa Brava bar and lounge. Salsa Brava: world-famous reef break located right offshore from Puerto Viejo. Note: this beach can get busy with cars and out-of-towners during weekends and holidays. I recommend taking the second entrance to the left with a sign that says Arrecife. Boasts narrow palm-fringed beaches with reefs offshore. Punta Uva and Arrecife: The rock outcropping called Punta Uva (or Grape Point in English) separates Punta Uva beach to the north and Arrecife (reef) to the south. Note: be careful swimming as there are sometimes dangerous riptides in this area. To the north is the main sunbathing and surfing beach with a lifeguard on duty. To the south, you will find Punta Cocles where the coral reef pools offer gentle bathing and swimming options. Playa Chiquita: This quaint little “suburb” of Puerto Viejo offers beautiful small beaches and coral reefs as well as delicious restaurants and cafés.Ĭocles and Punta Cocles: Cocles is great for walking, swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. ![]() Along the road that runs from Puerto to Manzanillo are smaller dirt roads that lead to secluded beaches, each with its own distinct feel. The biggest draw in Puerto Viejo is its beautiful beaches. ![]()
